Some are asserting that the economy can recover even without fully-engaged consumers.Perhaps an economy can,but not the U.S. economy.Consumers are what Americans are.Probably that applies to North America as a whole.With today’s consumer confidence report,we are not even close to economic recovery.Much more work remains.

It’s getting late on a Friday night,but the workaholics are still at it,writing and reading business blogs.They think about the existing home sales report.It was a genuinely good report.The sales of foreclosed homes were down,but the overall sales were up.People were buying homes in the normal course of things,not just buying at cut rates.The new home sales will be reported on next week,which will give a more definitive picture.Still,you have to be encouraged by the existing sales.The markets were justly pleased by that report.
